Kampala becomes the 10th in Africa to be connected to Uber

The taxi app Uber has started services in Uganda’s Capital Kampala. The technology-based taxi service, which connects drivers and passengers in real-time, says it is inspired by Kampala’s rapidly developing infrastructure and spirit of entrepreneurship.
Kampala becomes the 462nd city globally and the 10th in Africa to be connected to Uber.
Uber officials say they are coming to Uganda to complement the existing transport options, but with services designed to offer a more convenient and connected version of taxis.
Riders will have to download the Uber app on their mobile phones. A simple sign up process with a phone number or email address is required before requesting for ride.
Like elsewhere around the world, Uber’s disruption of the local metered cab industry has been met with resistance and regulation disputes.
While clients in Kampala are excited about Uber for cheaper and efficient services, traditional taxi operators view the service as a threat to their business.
However Uber officials say they will be providing a complimentary service and are working with existing drivers to offer rides.
All drivers on the Uber platform will be required to be vetted by Interpol for safety.
Every ride has a base cost of 38 US cents and another 27 cents for every kilometer covered.
Welcome news for Kampala passengers, who pay between 5 – 20 dollars to cover a 5-kilometer distance.
CCTV’s Michael Baleke has that report.
