Joseph Boakai was sworn in as Liberia’s president in Monrovia on Monday.

Leaders and diplomatic delegations from across the world attended the ceremony.

Boakai, who served as the west African country’s vice-president between 2006 and 2018 under Liberia’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will lead for six years.

The 79-year-old veteran politician won a run-off election in November and narrowly beat the retired international footballer by getting  50.9% of the vote over Weah’s 49.1%.

The new president pledged during the election campaigns to enhance infrastructure, reduce poverty, foster economic development, and improve healthcare.

He also highlighted the importance of tackling corruption and bolstering institutions to ensure a more prosperous Liberia.
