Iheanacho axed from Super Eagles squad for 2019 AFCON
Nigeria’s Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho has been dropped from the Super Eagles squad set to represent the country at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.
Iheanacho had a silent season in the Premier League, scoring only once in 30 appearances, 21 of which came as a substitute.
Other than Iheanacho, Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr also dropped defender Semi Ajayi who plays for Championship club Rotherham United.
Rohr included Mikel John Obi for the continental tournament, alongside fellow England based players like Arsenal’s Alexander Iwobi and Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi.
The 2019 AFCON is set to begin on 21 June and end on 19 July.
The Super Eagles are pooled alongside Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi in Group B, and will begin their campaign against the East Africans on 22 June.
The selected twenty-three players and coaching staff will leave Nigeria for Egypt on Sunday for their final round of preparation before the competition kicks off on June 21.
