Iconic South African film, Sarafina, shown for free across cinemas in South Africa in memory of the Soweto uprising
Cinemas across South Africa will be screening Sarafina free of charge on Thursday 16th June as South Africa marks the 40th year of the Soweto uprising on the day of the Youth.
Sarafina, is a well woven story of the students struggles against the opposition implementation of the Afrikaans language in school in the apartheid period in South Africa. The moving story that has been watched by millions of Africans is based on the ‘Soweto uprising’ of 16th June 1976.
Local television channels have also slated different times to show the classical movie as well such as the e.tv.
In a statement, producer Anant Singh said, “Sarafina! Has been an inspiration to me, firstly in getting the film made, and then being inspired by how it was embraced by the people of South Africa and the rest of the world.”
Sarafina is played by Leleti Khumalo and her inspiring teacher is played by Whoopi Goldberg.
