Namibian President Hage Geingob amid speculation by the local media that he was overpaid has said he was not aware of how much he earned.
According to the local media, the president had hired a group of six advisers each of who reportedly earned more than himself and his Cabinet ministers.
President Geingob said the Windhoek Observer newspaper appeared to have an agenda against him, hence its failure to observe objectivity.
The president, who addressed journalists in Windhoek during his last press conference of the year, also said “thanks to the media for saying I earn N$2 million” (about $133,000).
The local media have previously put the president’s salary at N$2 million per year.
According to Namibia’s law, the president should earn 15 per cent more than the Prime Minister who should earn just over N$1.2 million per year.
The president also appreciated the role of the media ,but warned that the sector should not be run on an agendas to dishonour people.
“Thanks to the media for saying I am getting N$2 million. Now I’m going to sue (the government) to get that money,” he said.
President Geingob directed The Namibian newspaper to ask the officials in the Presidency or somewhere else in the government to provide the figures the publication quoted in its Monday edition.
The Naimiban leader in October pledged to give away 20 per cent of his salary for the education of poor children in the southern African nation.
