Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei has signed an agreement with Uganda’s top University – Makerere University – to set up an Information Communication Technology (ICT) academy at the institution.
When the academy opens next month, over 1000 students will receive ICT technologies training, ICT industry technology certification and develop talents with practical skills for the ICT industry.
Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe asked the College of Computing at Makerere University to take full advantage of the enormous capacity at Huawei.
Frank Tumwebaze, Ugandan minister of ICT and national guidance, thanked Huawei for its consistent skilling and talent nurturing of Ugandans, noting that the initiative is in line with the digital strategy of transforming Uganda into a middle income country.
Lui Jiawei the Huawei Uganda Managing Director pledged Huawei’s continued support to skills development in Uganda.
“Huawei has so far cooperated with more than 300 universities around the world and educates more than 10,000 students every year,” said Liu.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe expressed his gratitude on his Twitter account where he thanked Huawei for investing USD 30000 in equipment for the University and a further USD 15000 deposit into the Academy. He also said that the Academy will lead to innovations that will spur economic development and social advancement for Ugandans.

Huawei said that after establishing this academy in Makerere University, it will move to establish others in different universities across the country.
