Torrential rains have flooded many parts of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos, rendering some homeless.

The federal government has activated its emergency response system to respond to the heavy floods, which has forced some residents and commercial offices to unceremoniously vacate their premises, says NAN.

“We are on top of the situation. The government is concerned by the recent occurrence of flooding in some parts of Victoria Island, Lekki, Oniru and its environs and our emergency lines 112 and 767 are open 24/7 for residents to report any emergency situation,” said Lagos State’s Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Adejare, according to the Premium Times.

Lagos has been flooded due to continuous down pour experienced in the state since three days ago.  The rain water has caused trouble because of the city’s poor drainage system. The government has also blamed the residents’ poor waste disposal habits that have blocked the drainage.

The floods are mainly on Lagos Island, the major business district and posh neighbourhoods. Some roads have been closed by the police due to the threat by heavy floods, the government has urged residents affected by the floods to evacuate.

“The lagoon is swollen up, there is high tide, so it would lock on our outfalls, the water would not recede or go into the lagoon as fast as it used to be. So that’s one of the main reason why we are having flooding all over the place; and coupled with our own man made problems such as people blocking the drainage channels, people even building on drainage channels, that’s what has also been causing all these problems,”  said Lagos State’s Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Adejare, according to the Premium Times.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company(EKEDC), has apologized for the blackout being experienced in Lagos areas, such as Lekki, Ajah, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, reports NAN.

“Dear Customer, we apologize for the electricity outage you are experiencing. This is a safety measure due to the current floods experienced at some of our stations”, the company said.

According to the Herald, caused several casualties and billions of Naira in damages to property and infrastructure in the State.
