A spokesman for the Ouagadougou Cathedral said that gunmen killed four Catholics who were in a religious procession in northern Burkina Faso on Tuesday.
The spokesman said the parade was moving through the town of Ouahigouya when a group intercepted the procession, killed four worshippers and burnt a statue of the Virgin Mary.
The attack comes in the wake of another one by armed men who killed five worshippers and a priest at a Catholic church in Dablo on Sunday.
The attackers burnt the church, several shops and a small café. They also looted a health centre and burnt the chief nurse’s car.
Burkina has been plagued by frequent and deadly attacks believed to be by jihadist groups since 2015 resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people.
The violence and attacks have forced tens of thousands to flee from their homes in the past few months.
In April, at least six people, including a senior pastor, died and two people were also reported missing following an attack targeting a church in Burkina Faso.
In the same month, jihadists attacked a village school in Maitaougou, Koulpelogo province, killing five teachers and a municipal worker.
