Guinea’s presidential candidates from the opposition have called for the elections slated for October 11 to be postponed till later this month, in order to give the country time to address irregularities in the process.

President Alpha Conde’s challengers say the preparations for the voting has been marred with massive irregularities that should be addressed before Guineans go to the ballot box in order to have fair elections.

Sidya Toure, the 2010 poll’s third-place finisher and the head of the opposition Union of Republican Frces Party said there had been problems with the distribution of voter cards and voters were unevenly distributed among polling stations.

Alpha Conde was elected in 2010, ending two years of brutal military rule, and is favoured to win a second term.

Anti-government demonstrations over the election process led to deaths of at least six people according to Amnesty International.
