Police in the Ghanaian capital Accra on Wednesday fired teargas and rubber bullets at protesters to bar them from accessing the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) to demand for a new electoral roll.
At least 30 people, including members of the oppositions New Patriotic Party were detained briefly foe violating a court injunction that barred the protestors from entering the offices of the EC.
The NPP has led calls for a fresh registration of voters ahead of the elections slated for next year, saying that there is evidence to prove that the electoral roll was bloated with ineligible voters that included names of Togolese nationals.
Witnesses said that some of the protesters were injured in the clash as they fled from hot water cannons fired at them by the anti-riot police.
The police had filed an injunction in court to keep the protesters on routes only agreed between them and the organisers.
President John Mahama is seeking a second term in next year’s elections in what many say will be a tight contest between him and Nana Akufo Addo of the opposition NPP.
