Ghana sacked Chris Hughton as head coach of the national football team following the squad’s group-stage exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars finished Group B with just two points and needed help if they were to advance to the knockout stage.

But those slim hopes went up in smoke after Cameroon defeated The Gambia 3-2.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect,” the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said after the team’s elimination was confirmed.

The GFA also fired the team’s entire technical bench.

In a statement, the GFA said it will, in the coming days, provide a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars.

Ghana could have secured automatic qualification with a win over Mozambique. Instead, that match ended in a 2-2 draw.

The result put Egypt in second place in Group B. Egypt advances to the round of 16 alongside surprise group leader, Cape Verde.
