Zimbabwe’s vice president Emerson Mnangagwa has allegedly hinted that the Zimbabwean government is struggling to feed its own people, even as his counterpart vice president Phelekezela Mphoko continues to stay in a classy five start restaurant, funded by the taxpayer’s money.

According to the Southern Eye, Mnangagwa said that the Zanu-PF led government was facing serious challenges securing relief food for an estimated 600,000 people in dire need.

This comes even as the World Food Program (WFP) said in August that around 1.5 million Zimbabweans were expected to go hungry this year after a dramatic fall in maize production.

Reports indicated that Zimbabwe needed to import at least 700,000 tons of maize to avert a food crisis. This would reportedly cost the country’s treasury around $224m.

Mnangagwa was speaking at the commissioning of the Mtshabezi-Umzingwane pipeline in Mtshabezi, Matabeleland South.

Phelekezela Mphoko has continued to stay in a hotel with his family since his appointment last year.

Mphoko has been reported to have spent more than 300 days in the hotel already, spending at least $120 000 on bed and breakfast as of September 26.
