Fears that an excess of malls in South Africa may be stretching the market

Despite dismal GDP growth, rising inflation and low consumer spending, some expect South Africa’s consumer market to buck the trend and remain resilient.

Developers of a new, massive regional mall in Johannesburg are confident that consumer spending will pick up despite having been subdued over the last two years.

As Sumitra Nydoo reports, however, the opening of the Mall of Africa has raised concerns that there is an over supply of shopping centers.
