Ethiopia leads Africa in World Athletics U20 Championships standings

The 2024 World Athletics Under 20 Championships ended in Lima, Peru over the weekend, with Ethiopia topping African countries in the medal rankings.

The U.S. was first overall with 15 medals – seven gold, four silver and bronze. The U.S. won the men’s 110m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, the men’s 4x400m relay, the women’s 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay.

Jamaica was second and Ethiopia third. The East African country topped the continent with 6 gold, 5 silver and one bronze. All their gold came from track events.

Kenya, which topped the continent’s Paris Olympics medal standings, was second with three gold, three silver and four bronze. Kenya won gold in the women’s 3,000m and 3,000m steeplechase and the men’s 1,500m.

South Africa’s two gold medals, one silver and two bronze earned them the third slot in the continent.

Botswana, ranked 14th overall, was fourth in Africa with one gold and silver medal in the 100m and 200m races, all won by sprinter Letsile Tebogo.

Algeria wrapped up the top five African list with two silver medals in the 800m race and 10,000m race walk.
