Egyptian winger Trezeguet scored his third goal in three matches as Aston Villa breathed life into their fight to avoid relegation by defeating Arsenal at Villa Park on Tuesday.

Trezeguet’s fine first-time finish in the 27th minute past Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez proved to be the game’s winner.

It was a crucial result which saw Villa move out of the relegation zone into 17th place above Watford with just one round of games left to play.

Villa were more clinical in front of goal against an Arsenal side which was still recovering from a stunning win of its own against defending champions Manchester City in the FA Cup semifinals.

Arsenal, who had more than two-thirds of possession, failed to register a shot on goal with any of its seven attempts.

Trezeguet could have added to his tally but his headed effort was comfortably gathered by Martinez. The home team would weather Arsenal’s pressure and go on to record their first win over Arsenal at Villa Park since November 1998.

Villa has now won its last two home matches thanks to goals all scored by the Egyptian. Just over a week ago, Villa defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 with Trezeguet scoring a brace.

Villa must win their final game of the season, away to West Ham, and hope that Watford, who will face Arsenal, does not win by two goals or more than they do.
