Egypt’s government submits shock resignation
The Egyptian government on Saturday submitted its resignation to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the presidency said, days after the agriculture minister was arrested over corruption.
The government reportedly reached the decision to quit after a 15-minute cabinet meeting.
This move could now pave way for the army chief Abdel el-Sisi to declare his candidacy for the presidency.
Government spokesman Hany Saleh told AFP news agency that Monday’s decision was taken because there was a “feeling that new blood is needed”.
Egypt’s interim president Adly Masnsour asked Beblawi to run the government’s affairs until a new prime minister is selected.
Beblawi was appointed after the army removed Morsi from the presidency last July following mass protests against his rule.
For Sisi to run for the presidency, he would first need to leave his post of Defence Minister and first deputy prime minister in the outgoing cabinet.
He had unveiled a political roadmap meant to lead to elections after toppling Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president.
