Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is the receipient of the 2020 the Babacar Ndiaye Great Road Builder Award, the African Development Bank (AfDB) announced following a virtual inaugural meeting of the group on Monday.

The award is a distinction for heads of state whose countries initiate outstanding achievements in relation to the development of roads, transportation and mobility.

“Al Sisi was recognized for his “personal leadership” in the development and construction of projects in Cairo such as the Heliopolis metro station, as well as a suspension bridge project on the Nile,” a statement on the AfDB’s website said.

The presentation of the award will take place during the final conference of the Africa Road Builders on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the AfDB.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Roads and transport to improve the quality of life of people in Africa”.

Gambian president Adama Barrow won the award in 2019 for his personal leadership in building the Senegambia Bridge that links Gambia to Senegal.

Africa Road Builders (ARB) Conference brings together representatives and stakeholders from the road and transport sectors to promote the development of roads, transport and mobility in Africa.
