Egypt has begun demolishing the party headquarters of former president Hosni Mubarak.

Workers started bringing down  Hosni Mubarak’s now defunct  National Democratic Party’s headquarters on Sunday.

Activists in the country had wanted the concrete tower block to be reserved as a monument to the uprising that removed Mubarak from power.

It is situated near Tahrir square the epicenter of the uprising that toppled Mubarak’s government in 2011.

The building was torched by activists during the 2011 protests.

The move to demolish the building was approved by the government in April this year after lengthy public discussion about it.

For protesters, National Democratic Party’s headquarters  was a charred reminder of the revolt against Mubarak’s 29-year reign.

The building was set ablaze on Jan. 28, 2011, when protesters overwhelmed Mubarak’s police forces and took control of Tahrir Square.
