ECOWAS has voted Senegalese President, Macky Sall, as its new chairman at a regional summit in Accra

Macky Sall takes over from Ghanaian President John Mahama, who had chaired the grouping since last year. The summit included addresses by Mahama and out-going Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Ghanaian leader focused on the importance of job creation for the West African region, while Goodluck Jonathan spoke about improved democracy in Nigeria.

Addressing the gathering he said, “For 40 years ECOWAS has slowly but surely built a credible reputation and competence in the area of peace, development and economic integration that we can be proud of.

During his term, President Mahama, presided over successful elections in Nigeria and Togo. He also  also brokered a peace pact in Burkina Faso after protests broke out in Ouagadougou in 2014 during an attempt by former President Blaise Compoare to amend the constitution to make him eligible for another term.
