Read < 1 minute

The East African Community (EAC) regional force’s exit from the Democratic Republic of Congo started December 3.

Following a summit conducted on November 25, EAC announced that the Democratic Republic of the Congo would not prolong the mandate of the regional force beyond December 8, 2023.

Troops from the regional bloc were deployed in November 2022 on the government’s request after the M23 rebel groups’ resurgence.

A spokesperson for the bloc said the first group of 100 soldiers left Goma Airport, headed for Nairobi, Kenya.
