Curfew hours extended in North Sinai following Friday attack
The Egyptian government has extended curfew hours in the North Sinai region, running until the end of the state of emergency that was declared recently.
The curfew will now start at 7:00pm and end at 6:00am the next morning, except in Al-Arish and the International Road, where it begins at 1.00am and ends at 5.00am.
The extension of the curfew hours was prompted by a Friday terror attack that killed 23 soldiers and injured a dozen more.
The attack was claimed by the Islamic State-affiliated militant group Sinai Province.
Earlier last week, Egypt’s House of Representatives approved an extension of a nationwide state of emergency until the end of September, as a police officer and two conscripts were killed by a roadside bomb in North Sinai.
But a separate state of emergency in North Sinai was first implemented by a presidential decree issued in October 2014.
According to the decision, the curfew will be imposed on the area between Tal Rafah in eastern Sinai, through the international borderline, reaching to Al-Ouga in the west, reaching Jabal Al-Halal.
Also, the curfew includes the area from west of Al-Arish through to the coast and the border line in Rafah, and to the south from Jabal Al-Halal to Al-Ouga.
