Coronavirus deaths in the UK pass 61,000 as highest daily death toll recorded since May
The UK’s daily coronavirus death toll has risen to the highest total since May as the total number of people who have died from the illness passed 61,000.
A further 367 Covid-19 deaths were recorded on Tuesday as figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show 54,609 deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in England and Wales up to 16 October and had been registered by 24 October.
It is the highest daily figure since 27 May, when 422 deaths were reported.
Figures published last week by the National Records for Scotland showed 4,376 deaths involving Covid-19 had been registered in Scotland up to 18 October. A total of 942 coronavirus-related deaths occurred in Northern Ireland up to 16 October and had been registered up to 21 October, according to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.
Together, these figures mean that so far 59,927 deaths have been registered in the UK when Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, including suspected cases. But since these statistics were compiled, further 1,189 deaths are known to have occurred in the UK, according to additional data published on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard taking the overall total to 61,116.
