The construction of east Africa’s biggest port has begun in Tanzania.

The new facility in Bagamoyo is projected to cost an estimated $11bn, with much of the funding for the construction coming from the Chinese Merchant Bank.

The construction is expected to be completed in two years upon which operations will begin.

The new port will handle double the capacity of the current port in Dar es Salaam.

Bagamoyo is currently a sleepy town that lies 60km north of Dar es Salaam.
