Congolese seperatist leader arrested after armed clash in Kinshasa

Read < 1 minute

Police in the Democratic Republic of Congo say they have arrested Ne Muanda Nsemi, a former MP and leader of a separatist sect that seeks to reestablish the historic Kingdom of Kongo.

Nsemi, a onetime chemistry professor and member of the country’s minority Bakongo ethnic group, was granted a presidential pardon last year after escaping jail with the help of supporters in 2017.

His Bundu Dia Kongo (BDK) organization has been outlawed for nearly a decade.

Nsemi’s arrest at the hands of Kinshasa’s police force comes after press in the city reported heavy gunfire in which 14 BDK members are believed to have died.
