South African paralimpian Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison into house arrest after spending one year of his five-year sentence in prison.

The former Olympic athlete was sentenced to five years in prison for culpable homicide in the killing of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius shot Reeva, a model and law school graduate, on Valentine’s Day 2013. In his defence, he said that he mistook her for an intruder.

Last week, a South African parole board said that it had approved the former athlete’s placement under house arrest and correctional supervision for the remaining four years of his sentence.

The board however issued Pistorius with a number of parole conditions to be adhered to during the sentence.

Among these parole conditions are;

  • No access to firearms
  • No taking of drugs or alcohol, and can be randomly tested by officials
  • Continue with psychotherapy sessions
  • No going out at night
  • Can work; will not be electronically tagged
  • His lawyers say track and field training is part of work, but this is still unclear
