Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that true friends support each other at critical moments when meeting with his Togolese counterpart Robert Dussey on Tuesday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while arriving at Lomé–Tokoin International Airport, also known as Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport. Wang paid a visit to Togo on invitation after concluding his visit to Tunisia.

Dussey, who made a special trip to greet Wang at the airport, said that Togo firmly upholds the one-China principle and supports the Chinese government’s position on the Taiwan question.

The Togolese government has stressed that there is only one China in the world and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, said Dussey, adding that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and Taiwan affairs are China’s internal affairs.

Togo fully supports China in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity, Dussey added.

Expressing thanks to Togo for its support of China’s just position, Wang said China will continue to firmly support Togo in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests, and jointly safeguard non-interference in internal affairs, which is a basic norm governing international relations
