Chad to hold referendum on new constitution on Sunday

Read < 1 minute

On Sunday, Chadians vote on a new constitution, in a key step towards elections promised.

Transitional President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who has governed since 2021, had promised to hand power to civilians and hold elections this year before postponing them to 2024.

The political and military situation in Chad has deteriorated following the death of former President Idriss Deby Itno on April 20, 2021.

His son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has been leading a transitional military council to govern the country ever since.
