Chad to hold presidential election in May

Read < 1 minute

Chad will hold the first round of its presidential election on May 6, with candidate nominations to be accepted on March 6-15, the National Elections Management Agency (ANGE) announced on Tuesday.

A final list of the candidates will be published on March 24 while campaigns will run from April 14 to May 4, ANGE President Ahmed Bartichet told reporters in the capital N’Djamena.

A second round of the election will take place on June 22 if there is no clear winner in the first round, Bartichet said.

The organization of the presidential election will mark the return to constitutional order in the Central African country which voted a new constitution in a popular referendum in December last year, he said.

The political and military situation in Chad has deteriorated since 2021 following the death of former President Idriss Deby Itno. His son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has since led a transitional military council to govern the country.

In January, the Patriotic Salvation Movement, Chad’s ruling party, appointed Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno as its presidential candidate and honorary president.
