The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is targeting a resumption of the 2019-20 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup either in late July and early August or September, according to a leaked document.
The two competitions were suspended in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic having reached the semifinal stages.
Should the competitions resume at the end of July, then the first legs of the semifinals will be played from July 31-August 2 and the second legs played from August 7-9.
As a result, the final of the Confederation Cup final would be played on August 23 while the Champions League final will be played on August 28.
Should the competitions resume in September, then the first legs of the semifinals will be played from September 4-6 and the second legs played from September 11-13.
Consequently, the final of the Confederation Cup final would be played on September 23 while the Champions League final will be played on September 25.
The Champions League semi-final showdowns are between Moroccan and Egyptian clubs. Raja Casablanca is due to meet Zamalek while Wydad Casablanca will face record eight-time winners Al Ahly in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, in the Confederation Cup, Pyramids FC of Egypt takes on Horoya of Guinea in one semi-final while the other game is an all-Moroccan clash between Renaissance Berkane and Hassania Agadir.
Rabat in Morocco was selected to host the Confederation Cup final while Douala in Cameroon was chosen to host this season’s Champions League final.
The finals were scheduled to be played on May 24 and May 29 respectively. It is still unclear if they will be able to host the finals given the situations in both countries.
All these adjustments mean the start of the next inter-clubs competition will be affected. CAF is eyeing a start for next season’s tournaments in October 2020 with the finals to be played in May 2021. It is also considering different scenarios should the finals be held in May.
