CAF officials due in Kenya for CHAN 2018 assessment
Officials from the Confederations of African Football (CAF) are set to visit Kenya on Monday to inspect the country’s preparations ahead of next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The trip had initially been scheduled to take place from 7 September but was postponed due to uncertainty that arose in the country following the Supreme Court’s annulment of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.
CAF had earlier in the year warned that the East African country risked losing the rights to host the January tournament due to lack of convincing preparations.
The delegation, led by the second Vice-President of CAF Constant Omari Selemani, will spend eight days in Kenya in what will be their third and final inspection visit.
The CHAN tournament, which is reserved for players who feature in their respective domestic leagues across Africa, will be staged from January 11 to February 2, 2018.
Serious sanctions await Kenya should hosting rights be withdrawn for any reason, including hefty fines as well as lengthy bans from competing in the competition, as was the case in 1996 when the hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations were withdrawn and handed to South Africa.
