Burundi government orders barricades to be removed

Read < 1 minute

Police barricades are coming down today following weeks of protests.

Government at the weekend ordered an immediate end to demonstrations against President Nkurunziza.

This was after protests were called off on Saturday in a one-day truce which gave many an opportunity to stock up food and money.

Protesters have vowed to continue with the protests despite government order.

Burundi has been rocked by the worst unrest since the civil war. Demonstrations began when President Pierre Nkurunziza declared his intention to run for a third term.

The protesters say that’s unconstitutional. Government has branded the protests an insurrection. The main concern now is that Burundians will defy government orders and take to the streets today.

At least eighteen people have been killed since the protests broke out in April 26 when Nkurunziza declared his bid for a third term.
