Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has handed over the chairmanship of the 15-member Southern African Development Community. His counterpart in Botswana, Ian Khama, now takes on the role.
Khama was handed over the SADC Chairperson’s Badge during the SADC’s annual Heads of State and Government Summit held on August 17 and 18 in Gaborone.
Khama has been the President of Botswana since 2008. After serving as Commander of the Botswana Defence Force, he entered politics and served as Vice-President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008.
The SADC chairmanship rotates among the heads of the states of the 15 member states; Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
