More than 70 members of a community in northeastern Nigeria were killed by Boko Haram militia overnight, a local media reported on Wednesday.

According to senator and chairman of the Senate Committee on the Army, Ali Ndume, “Members of the terrorist group killed 75 elderly people in the town of Gwoza in Borno State” adding that residents are in danger because of the attacks from the insurgents.

The situation in the region is dreadful as people die every day, even with the presence of security forces, Ndume said.

He added that apart from the attacks, residents faced hunger and that the situation would get worse if no NGO’s are present.

The insurgents have killed more than 50,000 civilians and security personnel and displaced about 3 million people in over a decade in the county’s northeast.
