BMW Plant in South Africa Using Renewable Energy
South Africa’s BMW plant is using energy harnessed from cow dung by Bio2Watt biogas power plant in Pretoria to run its facility. The biogas is part of the company’s goal to use renewable energy.
The BMW plant is currently using 12 megawatts per hour, the biogas plant will provide 4 megawatts per hour a 25 to 35 percent of the energy usage in the plant.
“We know that this won’t be the only project we need to work with. We want to get to 100 percent renewables by 2020, we are talking to the city of Tswane about methane gas, through the landfill site. that could certainly probably do that for us as well. So between the two projects, we could become totally self sustainable by 2020.” Said Tim Abbott, Managing Director of the BMW plant
South Africa has experience power cuts so companies are sourcing for renewable energy to be more efficient and make less impact on the environment
