Chinese President Xi Jinping received a ceremonial welcome by the Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II, as he began his first day of his four-day visit to the UK.

President Xi, accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, then took part in a procession along The Mall to Bunkingham Palace, where a state banquet will be held later.

Assisting the Queen to welcome the Chinese leader were the Duke of Edinburgh and UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

A 41-gun salute was held in Green Park in honour of President Xi’s visit after which he was given a guard of honour during the reception at Horse Guards Parade.
