Uganda’s opposition leader Kizza Besigye is due to appear in court on Friday to answer to treason charges leveled against him.

Besigye was arrested two weeks ago in the capital Kampala after staging a mock swearing in ahead of President Yoweri Museveni’s official inauguration.

Treason is a capital offense in Uganda though the deapenalty has not been carried out for years.

The opposition leader was previously charged with treason in 2005 but the case was later dropped.

President Museveni was declared winner of the February poll with 60.8 per cent of all votes cast while Besigye garnered 35 per cent.

Besigye dismissed the results as falsified, accusing the electoral commission of favouring Museveni.
