Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu has said that he will take stringent measures to stop acts of hooliganism in the country after suspected arsonists set fire on the largest market in the capital Lusaka.

Upon arrival from the Africa Union in Addis Ababa, President Lungu said that the security service will up their game to curb such occurrences.

“If it means taking measures which are unprecedented we will do just that; some people will have to lose their rights. People who have lost their property have lost their livelihoods. So if I become a dictator for once bear with me,” President Lungu was quoted by local media.

Lusaka’s biggest City Market was razed on Tuesday morning, hours after another market was also burned down. Property worth millions of Kwacha has been destroyed.

The government said the inferno was an act of arson and economic sabotage.

Zambia Police have issued the following statement increasing the reward to half a million kwacha to anybody with information about the people behind the spake of fires.
