African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat on Friday welcomed the peaceful resolution of political disputes in Senegal.

Faki said in a press release that he commends the decision of Senegalese President Macky Sall to organize a presidential election before the end of his mandate on April 2, 2024.

“This wise decision reflects the roots and resilience of democracy in Senegal, of which Africa has always been proud,” the AU Commission chief said in his statement.

Faki also called on all political actors as well as those of civil society to engage in a transparent, inclusive and peaceful electoral process that respects the principles of the rule of law and Senegalese democratic traditions.

The AU Commission chief also announced it will deploy an election observation mission to monitor the upcoming presidential election in Senegal.

On Wednesday, Sall announced that he had set March 24 as the new date of the first round of the Senegalese presidential election.
