Amina Mohammed sworn-in as UN Deputy Secretary-General

Nigeria’s former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed was yesterday sworn-in as the fifth deputy secretary-general of the United Nations (UN) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The new UN deputy chief pledged to commit to conflict prevention, Sustainable development goals & youth empowerment.

Ms. Mohammed opened the 2017 Economic and Social Council segment on Operational Activities for Development, where she gave her first address as the deputy secretary general

“Around the world, success in achieving the SDGs will ease global anxieties, provide a better life for women and men and build a firm foundation for stability and peace in all societies, everywhere,” Amina Mohammed said while delivering her first address as the United Nations as the Deputy Secretary-General

Amina became only the second African woman to be appointed to the role of Deputy Secretary-General of the UN. The first being Tanzania’s Asha-Rose Migiro who served in the role between 2007 – 2012 under Ban Ki-moon.
