Africa’s COVID-19 infections hit 1,267,656: Africa CDC

The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa stood at 1,267,656 by Thursday afternoon, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Figures from the agency also showed that the continent has reported 30,294 fatalities as some countries continues to see a steady increase in infections.

South Africa remains to be the worst-affected country on the continent, having registered 630,595 cases and 14,389 deaths.

The figures represent 49.7 percent of the continent’s caseload and 47.5 percent of its deaths.

Egypt is the second-hardest-hit country in Africa, having confirmed 99,280 infections and 5,461 deaths.

Other than the two most affected countries in Africa, the only other countries that had recorded more than 50,000 COVID-19 cases on the continent are Morocco (65,453), Nigeria (54,463) and Ethiopia (54,409).

A wider look at the data showed that eight African countries had reported more than 30,000 cases.

In terms of fatalities, Algeria (1,523), Morocco (1,216) and Nigeria (1,027) are the only other countries apart from South Africa and Egypt that have reported more than 1,000 deaths.

On the brighter side however, Africa has reported 1,009,824 successful recoveries.
