Two African presidents mediating talks aimed at restoring Burkina Faso to its march to democracy after Thursday’s coup have called for the return of interim president Michel Kafando.

Senegalese President Macky Sall, the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and Benin’s President Thomas Boni Yayi have held crisis talks with the coup leader General Gilbert Diendere, over the restoration of the interim government.

Gen Diendere is a former chief of staff to ex-president Blaise Compaore who was toppled by a popular uprising last October.

Sall’s office said that the negotiators were working on a scenario that could lead to a return of the country’s interim government led by Michel Kafando, who is under house arrest, being detained at the presidential palace by troops loyal to Compaore on Wednesday.

Sall and Boni Yayi met with Kafando at his home earlier on Saturday after two hours of talks with opposition leaders and civil society groups.

Chaos have rocked Burkina Faso since the coup staged on Thursday, leaving at least 10 people dead and more than 100 wounded.

Many people continue to set up road blocks across the country’s roads in protest of the coup.
