South Africa’s Minister of Police General Bheki Cele on Tuesday announced the appointment of award-winning journalist Lirandzu Themba as the Ministry Spokesperson.

“Ms Themba joins the Ministry of Police with rich knowledge of the media industry, in both print and electronic streams; and equally holds a number of significant achievements and experience in the communication field that will add value to the Ministry and in enhancing police communication going forward,” a statement from the South African Police Service read.

The announcement of Themba’s appointment came just hours after she announced her exit from South African TV news channel, eNCA.

“[JUST IN] Today I bow out of the news industry & hang up my mic. Reporting for eNCA from the Capital has been most rewarding. THANK YOU to the thousands of SAns for opening your homes & hearts & trusting me with your stories. Strength to all my colleagues holding the fort,” Themba said in a post on her Twitter account.

Themba was awarded as the journalist of the year by the National Press Club in 2011 and by Vodacom in 2017.
