A muezzin or one who calls people to prayer in Egypt has come under fire for changing the words of the call to dawn prayer.
According to the BBC Mahmoud al-Moghazi, the cleric of the Nile Delta town of Kafr-al-Dawar, is facing disciplinary measures for altering the words of the call (Adhan) to dawn (Al-Fajr) prayer saying “praying is better than spending time on Facebook”, instead of “praying is better than sleeping”.
Worshippers in the mosque in which the muezzin calls for prayers, had initially complained about the callers words accusing him of ‘heresy’.
The controversial muezzin has been suspended by the country’s ministry of religious affairs pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
Appearing on TV chat show on Sunday night, Al-Moghazi reacted to the suspension decision by threatening to go on a hunger strike. He also appealed for President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to exonerate him, the BBC reported.
