Africa’s COVID-19 infections reach 1,584, 484: Africa CDC
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa on Tuesday stood at 1,584,484 with 38,597 deaths, according to the latest data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The continent has recently seen a decline in its number of new infections, though some countries report seesaw numbers in their daily numbers.
South Africa remains the hardest-affected country on the continent, having registered 693,359 confirmed cases and 17,863 fatalities.
The country’s caseload is more than four times the number posted by the second-hardest country, Morocco, which had reported 153,761 infections by Tuesday afternoon.
Apart from the two most-hit countries, Egypt (104,648) is the only other African country that has reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections.
A wider look at the data by Africa CDC shows that a total of six countries, including South Africa, Morocco and Egypt, have reported more than 50,000 cases.
In terms of fatalities, Egypt (6,062), Morocco (2,636), Algeria (1,809), Ethiopia (1,301) and Nigeria (1,115) are the only other African countries besides South Africa to have recorded more than 1,000 COVID-19 deaths.
In better news however, the continent has posted 1,312,128 successful recoveries, and is considered by the World Health Organization to be the only region globally where COVID-19 cases are not increasing.
