Egypt’s top court upholds 3-year prison sentence against Mubarak-era minister
The Egyptian supreme court on Tuesday upheld a three-year sentence in prison against Safwat el-Sherif, former information minister under late President Hosni Mubarak, over charges of illicit gains.
The court also confirmed a fine of 6.3 million U.S. dollars against el-Sherif, who was also secretary general of Mubarak’s then ruling National Democratic Party.
His sons were acquitted of similar charges in 2018.
El-Sherif and several other Mubarak-era figures either have been jailed or are still on trial over corruption, embezzlement and inciting violence against protesters who toppled Mubarak in 2011.
