The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa have surpassed the 1.1 million mark as countries on the continent continue to report steady rises in infections.
According to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, countries in Africa have reported 1,118,814 cases cumulatively, with 25,618 deaths.
South Africa remains the worst-hit country by the pandemic, having registered 587,345 cases and 11,839 deaths.
The country accounts for 52.5 percent of Africa’s total infections and 46.2 of its fatalities.
Egypt is the second-worst-affected African country, having recorded 96,475 confirmed cases and 5,160 deaths.
Other than the two countries, only three other countries have reported more than 40,000 COVID-19 cases; Nigeria (49,068), Ghana (42,653) and Morocco (42,489).
Further on, eight African countries have reported more than 20,000 cases.
In terms of fatality figures, Algeria (1,370) is the only country besides South Africa and Egypt to have registered more than 1,000 deaths.
