Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur to face Coco Gauff in Lexington Open quarterfinals
Tunisian Ons Jabeur will face American teenager Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals of the Top Seed Open after defeating Olga Govortsova in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.
Jabeur defeated the Belarusian qualifier in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in just under two hours.
The Tunisian eighth seed hit 10 aces and converted seven out of nine break points to survive a scare after dropping the opening set.
After the game, Jabeur said that she knew she could trouble Govortsova but she was unable to find her rhythm in the beginning as the lengthy time out from competition due to COVID-19 had affected her.
“But I’m glad that I served good in the times that I needed to serve good – a couple of aces were really important for me to win my service games,” the world number 39 said.
“She was trying to be more aggressive at the end, when I was winning 5-2. That was a good match, I’m really proud of myself that I pulled out the win.”
Jabeur’s first match was a straight sets win against American Catherine McNally on Tuesday.
“Obviously I didn’t come back the same as when I stopped, but it’s good enough to start. I’m really proud that I pulled out these two matches here.”
