Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation on Monday with his Zambia counterpart Edgar Lungu, in which they discussed their countries’ COVID-19 responses.
President Xi hailed the strong support from Zambia in China’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, calling for joint efforts in enhancing bilateral cooperation to bring benefits to the people on both sides.
He thanked the Southern African country for providing strong support to China at the first stage of its fight against the COVID-19, noting that China’s medical aid and experience sharing after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Zambia highlight the close ties between the two countries.
The Chinese president vowed that China will take quick measures to provide further help to Zambia and other African countries to win the battle against the virus and restore their economic development.
On his part, President Lungu hailed China as a long-time ally for his country’s economic development. He also noted that the Asian country had assisted Zambia’s COVID-19 fight.
China has sent critical medical donations to Zambia and other African countries during their COVID-19 fights.
The latest aid to Zambia came on Tuesday as it received a batch of anti-pandemic medical supplies from the Chinese government through the Organization of African First ladies for Development to help mothers and children combat COVID-19.
Zambia has reported 3,326 COVID-19 infections and 128 deaths, according to data from the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.
