Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez scored twice as last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City hammered Burnley 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night.

Mahrez doubled City’s lead in the 43rd minute, following Phil Foden’s opener, after he dribbled his way past Burnley’s Charlie Taylor and fired in a low strike with his right foot.

Mahrez completed his brace five minutes later successfully converting a penalty after Argentine striker Sergio Aguero was fouled by Ben Mee in the penalty box.

Further strikes from David Silva and Foden in the second half completed a convincing win for Pep Guardiola’s team, which has won both their matches since the Premier League’s restart without conceding a single goal.

City remains in second place on 63 points from 30 games, 20 behind league leaders Liverpool while Burnley is 11th on 39 points.

Mahrez’s double mean he is the seventh African top scorer in Premier League history with 55 goals. Côte d’Ivoire’s Didier Drogba, who played for Chelsea, leads the way with 104 goals.

Manchester City is next in action on Thursday when the outgoing champions travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.
