As Kenya marked 100 days since its first case of COVID-19, the country reported its highest daily new infections yet as the ministry of health urged Kenyans to adhere to the regulations put in place to curb further spread of the disease.
Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe, announced 260 new infections, 254 of whom are Kenyans while six are foreigners.
The East African country’s number of total COVID-19 cases has now reached 4,738.
Kagwe assured Kenyans that the government was strengthening its response to the pandemic to ensure it is contained soon.
“Our systems are now much better, but we are still learning. COVID-19 has badly impacted our economy including loss of jobs. But the government has made much effort to contain it. By next week each county will have at least 300 isolation bed capacity, he said.
Kenya is among many countries that imposed lockdown measures earlier this year in a bid to contain the spread of the disease.
The government has recently hinted at reopening the country as its economy took a battering due to the restrictions imposed.
Some of the restrictions still in place include a partial lockdown that affects among other regions, the capital Nairobi. A nationwide curfew imposed in March is also still effective until July 6.
Kagwe urged Kenyans to continue observing the laid guidelines in order to help contain the spread of the disease.
“It is evident that COVID-19 will be with us longer and it will stretch our healthcare system, it is now our personal responsibility to ensure we observe the containment measures to fight the disease,” he said.
